Chapter 1 of 4

How it began

Honestly, what made me fall in love with sewing was Project Runway. My kids were 10 and seven so I was a busy mom taking care of them working full-time taking care of the house and it became a bit of an escape for me. I would see these designers creating these beautiful garments, well sometimes not so beautiful, but still the process of creating something beautiful for people to wear just fascinated me. I would always say how I wished I could do that, but I never did just because life is like that and you’re very busy and I never had anybody in my family who sewed. I know that most people have a grandmother that sews or a mother that sews, but that was not the case with me at all, so I never knew anybody who could teach me. Anyways, fast-forward to 2025 my kids are adults now, it’s Mother’s Day and my son, who is very creative, he crochets beautiful things, calls my daughter and son-in-law and tells them “Hey, for Mother’s Day this year let’s make Mom’s dream finally come true and set her up with a sewing station because she won’t do it for herself”, and it changed my life 🥰.

What it gave her

It’s impacted my life in such a positive way because I’ve fallen in love with the process of learning. I learned the hard way that it’s not easy and it takes a lot of practice which I honestly wasn’t ready for but I’m OK with it. I have had several moments of frustration where I think to myself “I can’t do this “ but luckily my son, who like I said is creative and understands the process, just kept telling me mom it doesnt happen overnight but once you learn, you’re going to see how good you can be. So now I’m waiting for that moment to still come however, I practice almost every day and I have created a few things that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak.

Her Rosys make

The first Rosys pattern I made was the mini Tie neck dress. The experience was good of course I made some mistakes. I even had to reach out to Rosie to ask her a couple of questions, but it turned ok in my eyes, but the person I made it for absolutely loved it. It did have some imperfections but again I’m trying to be patient with myself and I keep saying in my head. It’s a process it will get better. I think my biggest problem is I see all the imperfections that nobody else sees. One thing I love about Rosie’s patterns is that their effortless in the sense of style, I love how they look I love how they flow and the way they can be styled in an understated elegant type of way.

Her advice

What I would say to someone who wants to start sewing is that if I can start it at 56 and completely fallen in love with something new at this stage of my life so can you. It’s a process and everyone is different, not everyone is going to learn and create at the same pace, but if you embrace it and give yourself grace, you’ll get there and it will make you so happy. The sense of accomplishment to see something that you’ve made honestly gives you such a nice sense of pride.
