Surrounded by Seamstresses, Sarah Found Her Own Way to Create
“I am not as skilled as my mother and sister, not at all, but they help me with my ideas and that makes me appreciate sewing too (at my level).”
Chapter 1 of 5
How it began
My mother has sewn since forever, she is an excellent seamstress who has made everything from barbie and doll clothes to clothes for me and my sister, clothes for herself and friends. My sister became the same, an amazing seamstress as well, especially with the difficult patterns and the lively outfits for medieval wedding themes, halloween dresses, the prom dress, and princess outfits for parties. Simply put, I enjoy sewing because I grew up in a world where sewing is part of everyday life, design and creation. I am not as skilled as my mother and sister, not at all, but they help me with my ideas and that makes me appreciate sewing too (at my level).
Chapter 2 of 5
Her Rosys make
My first project from you was the Crop Top and Maxi Skirt Pattern, but instead of the yellow fabric I made it in light blue.
Chapter 3 of 5
What it gave her
With sewing in everyday life, I can get clothes that no one else has or clothes that others have but that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to get. I can wear a outfit as, eg. the queens outfit by copying what she is wearing.
Chapter 4 of 5
More from her story
What has been more fun and perhaps most developing in my own sewing journey are the small tricks, the tricks for how to sew an “invisible zipper” or which method is the smartest approach for hemming, taking in, altering, lengthening, etc.
Chapter 5 of 5
Her advice
To others I would say: “try it yourself before asking for help, examine your mistakes and try to understand what went wrong or how you should proceed next, google helpful videos, redo and try again.” My main tip is probably that you should always sew first on an unimportant fabric instead of directly on the final fabric, eg. a bedsheet? Then it doesn’t matter if you sew incorrectly, instead you get an opportunity to develop yourself more.
