How Sewing Helped Me Create, Connect, and Slow Down

Chapter 1 of 5

How it began

Hi! My name is Logan Renggli, and I am a Marriage and Family Therapist and a mom of 2 little ones. I started my sewing journey in January of 2026 after watching one of my favorite YouTubers talk about sewing and how it has been great for her mental health. I felt incredibly intimidated by the whole thing, but my words for 2026 were Create and Connect, and I thought sewing might be a good way to not only create but also to connect with others in the sewing community both locally and remotely.

I am also in a book club and a few of the girls there also sew so I asked one of them if they wanted to come over and teach me how to sew on my Grandma's 1950’s sewing machine. We made my daughter a pair of pants that first night and I was instantly hooked. I realized that sewing allows me to tap into my creative side while also giving me fairly quick gratification (which my personality style really needs!) when I produce something that is wearable and unique/specific to my body and what I want to wear.

I quickly realized I needed to upgrade my sewing machine and my incredible grandma offered to buy me a new one so I got the hot pink Singer Heavy Duty machine and it has been a game changer. At this point I am completely self taught and have watched hours and hours of youtube videos of people sewing and have learned so many new skills. Every time I make an article of clothing I learn something new and although sometimes it is a very frustrating lesson, it is a lesson nonetheless.

What it gave her

I think at this point I am up to about 30 pieces of clothing I have made and it has been the most rewarding and incredible experience. As a therapist I am constantly talking with clients about finding ways to connect to their body, find ways to be more present (especially in 2026) and ways to connect with themselves and those around them with intentionality. Sewing has been that for me. It has allowed me to slow down, focus on a goal and be intentional with my time (and also I get to devour audiobooks while I sew, win win!).

Chapter 3 of 5

Sewing together

Shortly after I started I bought a few patterns which included one of Rosy’s patterns off Etsy (The Crop Top and Shorts Set) which introduced me to the Whatsapp group and other people who are on their sewing journey. Sewing has also allowed me to connect with a group on Discord as well as in my own community and we’ve since had sewing nights, late night chats about sewing and so much inspiration and support.

Her Rosys make

I felt the Crop Top and Shorts Set was a great beginner set and turned out super well. My friend had just given me a bunch of fabric which included large pieces of linen so I made the set twice with slight adjustments on each set to make it unique to me.

Through that set I learned how to attach strings for bows, how to hem necklines and how to attach sleeves which I had never done. I appreciated how beginner friendly Rosy’s patterns were and that they could be done in a day or two.

Chapter 5 of 5

What it gave her

As a working mom, wife and therapist I struggle with finding time for myself but sewing has been a huge way to decompress and create (and ignore all responsibilities in my home). It has been by far the most rewarding self care I have found and I love how much I have learned and grown.

Learning a new skill, creating with my hands and connecting with other like minded women has been the highlight of 2026 for me. I have also loved finding fabric stores in my area, shopping at second hand shops for bargain fabric and creating matching outfits for my kids and I.
